Impeach New York County District Attorney Alvin Bragg

I’d like to start out by stating that I don’t even like Donald Trump. As far as I’m concerned, he’s one of the worst presidents the United States has ever had.

However, the action that New York County Attorney, Alvin Bragg has brought against him is tantamount to charging a serial killer with auto theft, without even alleging that he has stolen a car.

Donald Trump is not on trial for any crime he might reasonably be believed to have committed. He’s got an angry mob after him. The mob has every right to be angry, but is this the kind of justice system we want, where any prosecutor can probably find a way to get you if they want to, and where the only real crime is being unpopular?

Though the indictment says nothing about election interference, in his opening statement, Mr. Bragg took issue with Mr. Trump’s attemps at influencing, or as he put it, corrupting the 2016 election.

Trying to influence the election is what candidates for public office normally do.

I understand Mr. Bragg doesn’t like the way he went about it. Fair enough. So what was the crime exactly? The only crime mentioned in this 34 count indictment is FALSIFYING BUSINESS RECORDS IN THE FIRST DEGREE.

The allegation is that Donald Trump reimbursed his attorney for hush money that the attorney had paid to Stormy Daniels, to keep her quiet about an affair they had allegedly had.

The indictment didn’t contain even a suggestion that there was anything illegal about this. The problem, as Mr. Bragg sees it, is that these payments appeared on the invoices and checks as payment for legal services.

If everything Mr. Bragg alleges is true, these were indeed payments for legal services, and no crime was committed. One might suggest some other way of categorizing the payments, though I’m not sure how the prosecutor thinks they should have been categorized.

If a federal prosecutor wants to charge Donald Trump with treason, based on his behavior on January 6^th, 2020, I’d have no problem with that. They aren’t going that route, because they don’t want to ignite a civil war. Fair enough. Charge him with something legitimate, or don’t charge him.

Rather than upholding the law, Alvin Bragg is acting as a political hitman. He has no business practicing law. I’d really like to see him disbarred, but impeachment would be a nice start.
